Friday, August 1st marked exactly one year since Casey and I packed up our lives and moved to Atlanta, and today is our 9th wedding anniversary! The past year has looked different than anything we possibly could have imagined: many highs, lows, celebrations, and challenges. The older I get, the less meaning that time seems to have, but one year in a new city and another year spending our lives together will always feel like a milestone worth celebrating.

Atlanta is unlike anywhere I’ve ever lived; more so than in previous transitions, I’ve struggled to find a strong sense of community and belonging here. There are some exceptions, of course, and I am especially grateful to the individuals who have embraced us in our new environment. I know that Casey feels similarly. Nonetheless, this city feels far less like ‘home’ than I hoped it would, after a full 12 months of living here. Adjusting to the cultural differences of living in ‘the South’ has also not been easy for us, and I often still feel like an outsider in many social situations.

A source of encouragement and excitement during this time has been found in the work that we each get to do in this city. Kennesaw State has provided me with a multitude of professional challenges and opportunities. We’ve also enjoyed some gratifying travels this year to both new places and some old favorites. I am eagerly looking forward to another year at KSU, and I know that Casey is excited about her continued work with BGCA.

Another source of encouragement has been found in each other. I am continually grateful to have a partner like Casey that I can confide in, weather the storms with, and adventure through life with together. I'm so proud of her, and in awe of the kind, thoughtful, gentle, patient, and strong force that she is in the world.

While our first year in Atlanta has not been an easy one, I’m optimistic about continued growth and challenges in the second year. I am also ceaselessly thankful to walk through life with this amazing person by my side. Happy Anniversary, Casey - I love you!
